Function of Catalogue

Subject Analysis
"Aboutness" may be expressed through:

-Controlled vocabulary (thesaurus)
-LCSH - Library of Congress Subjects Heading/Sears List, etc
-Free Text
Subject Heading
Cutter Principles
-to enable a person to find a work of which thee subject is known

-to show what the library has on a given subject [and] in a given kind of literature
-the catalog is a tool for collocation (gathering groups of materials by subject and genre).

Classification
-Two Primary Functions:

LCC - Library of Congress Classification
DDC - Dewey Decimal Classification

Call Number

Example of LCC
LC 149 M34 201 C1

-LC 149 kelas number
-M34 - based on main entry CONTOH tajuk buku ialah The Making (M) of Literate Societe
-2001

Information Life Circle

ACTIVE

How can you describe an information-bearing object? (object yang membawa maklumat).
- Index

Bibliografi Information
- AACR2 - AACR2 - Anglo American Catalogue Rule 2
- PSZ ada MARC, MARC = MAchine Reliable Catalogue

Goals of Descriptive Cataloging
1. to enable a person to find a document of which: the author or, the title, or the subject is known
-kadangkala kita tahu nama buku tapi tak tahu siapa penulis
-kadangkala kita tahu nama buku, tajuk buku tetapi tak tahu siapa penulis dia

2. To show what a library has
- by given author
- on a given subject
- in a given kind (or form) of literature

3. To assist in the choice of a document
- as to its edition (bibliografi)
- as to its character (literary or topical) - readingship - target audience, cara penulisan buku itu tinggi atau rendah/sesuai dibaca semua peringkat umur, atau golongan berpelajaran tinggi (kerana bahasa tinggi) dan sebagainya.

kelas rehat seketika-

UNTUK DEWEY guna buku Mat Jizat

kod agama P
Q matematik
H commerce, management

Sekolah pakai Dewey.
